The Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Sorrows was founded in 1839 in Coriano, Italy, by Blessed Elisabetta Renzi.  She was committed to providing both human and Christian formation and education to the children and young women of her times.  Many benefited from Mother Elisabetta’s work in education and her assistance to the poor. She was a channel of God’s grace to all she met.  Soon the sisters were in great demand in Italy, and the Congregation quickly grew in numbers of sisters, diversity of educational charitable ministries, and geographical extent.

In October 1947, the Congregation moved beyond the borders of Italy and opened its first mission in Louisiana.  The sisters were invited by Bishop Greco to the Diocese of Alexandria to educate the disadvantaged, which included minorities and children with developmental disabilities.  Today, the sisters continue to work in educating the young and the poor in six countries around the world (Italy, U.S., Mexico, Brazil, Bangladesh, and Zimbabwe).  Though their ministries have expanded to embrace the needs of the times, in all they do, the sisters remain faithful to Mother Elisabetta's charism, that of "witnessing to the preferential love of Christ to the young, the poor, the weak, and the needy."
