You can assist the sisters who benefit from the work of Council of Major Superiors of Women Religious by making a financial gift. The Council of Major Superiors of Women Religious (CMSWR) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. All contributions made to CMSWR are tax deductible to the extent of the law.

Your gift of stocks, bonds or securities to the Council of Major Superiors of Women Religious (CMSWR) may result in tax savings.

To make a gift of stock, please write a Letter of Intent that includes your name, address, and phone number. We can provide you with the necessary tax documentation for your broker to transfer the securities.

Please note: if you give stocks or bonds that have appreciated in value, you get a tax deduction for the full current value and neither you nor CMSWR have to pay capital gains tax for the increased value. Stocks or bonds that have decreased in value have a tax deduction for the current value; however, CMSWR would still benefit. Note that year-end stock gifts should be received at least ten days prior to the close of the calendar year for proper processing.

Gifts may be made to the Council of Major Superiors of Women Religious in memory or in honor of a special person in your life.

When making a gift of this type, please include a note with the following information:

  • Name of the deceased person or persons you are honoring
  • Name of the person to whom notice of this gift should be sent with their address, city, state and zip code

A memorial card is sent to the family mentioning the name and address of the donor, but not the amount of the gift.

An honorarium card is sent to the person being honored mentioning the occasion, name and address of the donor, but not the amount of the gift.

There are many ways to support the Council of Major Superiors of Women Religious and our commitment to the full flowering of religious life in the United States. For those interested in supporting the Council of Major Superiors of Women Religious via their workplace, there are a number of options:

  • Matching Gifts: Many employers offer a matching gift program. Please contact CMSWR for verification of your gift to make your dollars go even further.
  • IRA Charitable Rollover: On Dec. 18, 2015, the President of the United States signed into law the Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes Act of 2015. The new law made the IRA charitable rollover retroactive to Jan. 1, 2015, and will remain in effect not only for 2015 but permanently. Donors 70½ or older are once again eligible to move up to $100,000 from their IRAs directly to qualified charities without having to pay income tax on the money. The IRA charitable rollover rules are listed below.

Donors may make a direct transfer if

  1. The donor is age 70½ or older on the day of the gift.
  2. The donor transfers up to $100,000 directly from the donor’s IRA to one or more qualified charities. This opportunity applies only to IRAs and not to other types of retirement plans.
  3. The donor does not receive any goods or services in return for the rollover gift in order to qualify for tax-free treatment.
  4. The gift needs to be made by Dec. 31st, for the gift to qualify in the current calendar year.
